Customer Rating: Summary: Her Books helped me to get my green card. Comment: I've been following the author's other immigration books and I found there very good material and up to date. Before, we hired immigration lawyer, but it was costly,so I'm trying to find a cheaper altenative. I read eveything, given at least the most informative case scenario which is interesting I just follow what's written before filing and interview do's and dont's and voila! Got my greencard. It's a great relief! Customer Rating: Summary: I Used This Book - My Husband Just Got his Green Card Comment: I used this book when my husband and I were applying for a green card. He was in the country legally as a student when we got married. I had looked at all of the documents from INS, and there were so many of them that I thought I might need an attorney to help me with the process.
I actually spent two days calling immigration attorneys, dealt with being put on hold, being told that they would call me back, and being told that it would be multiple thousands of dollars for them to handle this for me. And, even if I got an attorney to do this, I would still need to be the one to accumulate all of the papers and evidence that the INS requests. I decided to order this book instead and see if I could handle it on my own.
Basically, if you have a decent amount of education and can speak English, you should be able to do this without an attorney. It does take time and effort. This book answered most of the questions that I had. I still had some questions - I still was very careful about reading all of the directions on the forms. The book gave me the confidence to do this on my own. My husband and I had our interview two weeks ago and he just got his green card yesterday. Overall, I thought that the book was well worth the money. I particularly appreciated the checklists.
As for the "immigration attorney" who claims that this book gives bad advice, she is wrong. Her review claims that some people's cases will be delayed if they use the advice of this book: "their case will be delayed by over a year if they follow the advice presented in this book of first filing the relative petition (I-130) and then later after that petition is approved filing the adjustment of status."
The book actually advises that you file the I-130 along with the adjustment of status. That is what I did- and if you are filing both- you should remember to file them at the same time. It does save you time - it is also what is recommended in this book.
You're engaged or married to a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and all you want is the right to be together in the U.S. Should be easy, right? It's not. Information can be hard to find, the government bureaucracy isn't helpful, delays are inevitable. Worst of all, there wasn't an easy-to-use guide through the process -- until now.
The 5th edition is completely updated throughout, covering the latest fees, sponsorship requirements and changes to the application process. It directs you to the most current forms online, and provides up-to-date sample forms to guide you.
