This book examines some of the key issues around violence at work which have emerged in the new millennium, including the events of September 11 and other terrorist related incidents. It builds upon the expanded typology of workplace violence in Violence at Work (Willan, 2001), and identified four types of workplace violence: intrusive, external violence including terrorism; consumer/client related violence; staff related violence; and organisational violence. The contributors from this book, drawn from North America, the UK, Europe and Australasia, outline the latest research, work and response strategies around each of these four types of workplace violence. Together they aim to provide a basis for a management response to all major forms of work related abuse, aggression and violence at al levels of an organisation. The book fills a void in the current literature dealing with terrorism and workplace violence by identifying terrorism incidents as being an extreme form of workplace violence; addresses some controversial and emerging issues such as staff who abuse those in their care, organisations who are abusive to their staff and service users; and outlines how organisations can train and support staff to help themselves and others to operate in a much more globally unstable work environment.
